"... the most important considerations in devising educational programs for children with autistic spectrum disorders have to do with recognition of the autism spectrum as a whole, with the concomitant implications for social, communicative, and behavioral development and learning, and with the understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the individual child across areas of development."
—Educating Children with Autism2001

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)

We are located in Montgomery County Maryland and are working collaboratively with the public schools whenever possible to improve educational experiences and educational outcomes for students on the autism spectrum.

Montgomery County is located in Maryland just north of Washington D.C. and southwest of Baltimore. Montgomery County Public Schools comprise the 16th largest public school system in the United States, with an estimated enrollment of 142,000 students for the 2009-2010 school year. Of the 142,000 students, approximately 1,500 students have been determined to be on the autism spectrum. (However, the total may be higher because some students with high-functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome may be identified by a different disability code such as speech/language impairment.)
